COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The Authority has a statutory duty to engage with communities widely to

  • To seek the public's support for the work of the Police
  • To inform people about police performance issues

but more importantly, to

  • Find out what people think about the way they are policed and how they want to see the service developed in the future.

This information is needed

  • To enable the Authority to hold the Chief Constable to account for current performance and
  • To determine local policing priorities so that the Authority and the Chief Constable can set the strategic direction of the Force through the policing plans - NYPolicing Thrust.

The Authority has a dual approach to community engagement. Firstly, it maintains the capacity to consult and communicate on a force-wide basis by a variety of means, including on-line questionnaires on this website, e-newsletters, community surveys, local authority citizens' panels, focus groups, local council newspapers, media campaigns, etc. These are used to inform the public of overall force performance/development and to consult people on issues affecting all the area, such as the budget and best value reviews. Please click here if you wish to subscribe to our regular e-newsletter which gives advance notification of forthcoming consultations and regular updates on police performance.

Secondly, the Authority recognises that local people want to receive information about, and be consulted on, local policing issues. So, the Authority, in association with its local Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs) and local council partners, has a network of local public meetings in each of the council areas where people can talk to their local police authority member and local police officers.
