Police Authority welcomes the Policing Green Paper
North Yorkshire Police Authority has welcomed the Policing Green Paper published today by Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith.
The Green Paper, published in response to the recent Review of Policing carried out by Sir Ronnie Flanagan, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary, sets out the Government’s ideas for further reform of the police service.
The Government’s proposals include
• further development of neighbourhood policing • provision of local crime information to communities • reducing the burden of bureaucracy on police officers • reducing nationally imposed targets • ways of improving leadership skills throughout the police service • improving accountability of policing through direct election of community representatives on policing matters

Authority is an independent body, created on 1 April
1995. The
area served by the Authority and the North
Yorkshire Police Force comprises the North Yorkshire
County Council and the City of York areas. This
is one of the largest geographical policing areas
in the country. |

NY Policing Plan 2008-11

- To secure an efficient and effective police
service on behalf of the local community
- To consult with the local community about
its policing needs and priorities
- To hold the Chief Constable to account for
police performance, on behalf of local people
- To ensure that there is continuous improvement
in the delivery of the police service in our
area.
The Authority works with the Chief Constable
to prepare a 3 year strategy for the development
of the service and an annual Policing Plan which
sets out the way in which the Chief Constable
will police the area having regard to the Home
Secretary's national policing priorities and
the local priorities determined by the Police
Authority. This document is called NY Policing Plan.

The Authority also has its own Business Plan outlining the Authority's vision, mission, objectives and priorities for improvement.
