INDEPENDENT CUSTODY VISITING SCHEME

Independent Custody Visitors are members of the public from various backgrounds within the North Yorkshire communities, who make unannounced visits to police stations in North Yorkshire to speak to people detained in cells to check on their welfare and the conditions in which they are being held.

Independent Custody Visiting is a vital element of the work of North Yorkshire Police Authority in ensuring the police service is open and accountable to the people it serves and North Yorkshire Police Authority is indebted to its Independent Custody Visitors who undertake this important voluntary work.

You can find further information about the role of custody visiting in North Yorkshire, including how visits are carried out, a day in the life of one of our Independent Custody Visitors and view our application pack and on line application form by following the links on the left hand side.

In 2009/10, 59 Independent Custody Visitors working in 5 panel areas made 371 visits to police stations throughout North Yorkshire and the City of York and interviewed 620 detainees.
