Neighbourhood Policing is proactive policing, with locally identified Officers and Staff teams working with the community.
Through effective intelligence gathering and consultation the teams can ensure that the resources are directed exactly to where
they are needed and where they can have the most efficient impact. To achieve this we have:
The Right People at the Right Place in the Right Numbers in order to create neighbourhoods that are safe and feel safe.
- Right People - our dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Teams
- Right Places - your local areas, comprising the 195 wards in the North Yorkshire policing area
- Right Numbers - the team members tailored to your local needs within the finite budget available.
Neighbourhood Policing Teams are made up of Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers and Special Constables and are led in groups by an Inspector. The teams deliver quality of life policing, which focuses on, and resolves local issues. They are:
- Highly visible & accessible to all members of the community
- Provide opportunities for citizens to influence policing priorities in their neighbourhood
- Work closely with our partners, other agencies and local communities
- Collect and analyse community intelligence, so that local priorities can be targeted jointly with our partners
- Provide solutions, feedback and answers to local issues
There are 54 Neighbourhood Policing Teams covering the 195 wards within North Yorkshire and the City of York. We have invested heavily into the Teams since 3rd April 2006 with more Officers & Police Staff working within neighbourhoods than ever before, this will be continued with a steady increase in the numbers of both the Special Constabulary and Police Community Support Officers. We aim to have, by 2008, 300 Special Constables (currently at 200) and we will have another 108 PCSOs in place by 31 March 07 giving us an establishment of 183 that will rise to 269 by 2008.
Neighbourhood Policing goes back to the heart of the problem and seeks to prevent crime before it happens or tackle those low level crimes, which can often progress to more serious things. We achieve this by providing our communities with:
- ACCESS - to our policing community services through a named point of contact
- INFLUENCE - over community safety priorities in their neighbourhood
- INTERVENTIONS - joint action with communities and partners to solve problems
- ANSWERS - sustainable solutions to problems and feedback on results
Neighbourhood Policing enables communities to determine the priorities for action. When Neighbourhood Teams tackle these in partnership with communities and other local services, neighbourhoods feel safer and are safer for those living and working in them.
