Consultation

The Authority has a statutory duty to consult the public widely to

To seek the public's support for the work of the Police
To inform people about police performance issues

but more importantly, to

Find out what people think about the way they are policed

This information is needed to determine local policing priorities so that the Authority and the Chief Constable can set the strategic direction of the Force through the policing plan.

The basis of the Authority's consultation work is through a network of Community and Policing (CaP) Groups throughout the area, although the Authority is developing other consultation techniques to engage groups and individuals not attracted to the CaP Group meetings.

In each of the 8 District Council areas covered by the Force, there is

A number of Tier 2 CaP Groups (or their equivalent), covering a Group of Parishes/Wards. These Groups hold open meetings 2,3 or 4 times per year where the public can air their views about policing matters. These meetings are usually attended on behalf of the Force by the Local Area Policing (LAP) Commander or by other local officers.
One Tier 1 Group covering the whole of the District. They meet publicly 3 or 4 times per year and their role is to identify trends arising from reports from the Tier 2 Groups, to look strategically at perceived problems facing the District, to work with the District Community Safety Partnership and to report to the Authority on those issues. Authority members are represented at these groups.

At Tier 2 level in some areas such as Craven and Richmondshire Districts, the Authority holds joint consultation meetings with other public service agencies such as the District Council, thereby cutting down duplication and generating a multi-agency approach to people's problems.

If you have a view about policing in your local area, please attend your local CaP Group

Sometimes, the Authority will want views on a specific subject, such as what kind of budget rise would be supported by Council Tax payers. In these instances, it will hold public meetings throughout the area, carry out specific focus group consultation or use this web site.
